Unfortunately, Red Orchestra has a lot of gripes. There’s also a format where you can battle against other players in tanks, although the servers I tried weren’t very populated. This really adds a great sense of realism to a genre that prides itself on balls-out tactics. This is an incredible mechanic, and is given a huge boost by the fact well-performing soldiers can boost the morale of nearby players. Whenever it gets too low, your vision will get blurry and you’ll start to shake. You have no ammo counter, there is no red jelly on the screen, and a skillfully designed morale system adds a subtle touch of realism.Įach player has a morale bar, which is affected whenever you come under heavy fire, or even when a nearby player gets shot. This is not a Call of Duty style shooter where you can expect to run across a road unscathed. Make no mistake – bullets in this game are designed to kill and destroy. There are plenty of bullets, explosions and debris flying everywhere, and thanks to a new cover system you’ll be doing well if you can keep your head down the majority of the time. You’ll also find there are a limited number of spots for each player in each class, which results in a good amount of balance. Once you take a step into RO2, you’ll choose from a number of different classes such as machine gunner, rifleman, assault, etc. Red Orchestra is primarily a multiplayer FPS, set in the context of the German army invading Russia during the Second World War. And while Tripwire Interactive’s RO2 isn’t the most original FPS on the table, there are a lot of good things to like here. It’s been a while since the industry beat World War 2 to death – a good six years since the last Call of Duty game set in that time period – so it’s refreshing to come back to a new take on the genre. I’m coming into this game clean – and unfortunately, that’s not a good thing. Full disclosure here – I never played the original Red Orchestra, I’m well aware of how popular it is and the somewhat cult following it’s attracted.
